The Skills Dance Taught Me That I Use Every Day in Communications

When people learn that I work in communications and marketing while also teaching dance, they often see them as completely separate worlds. One is creative and artistic; the other is strategic and professional.

The truth is that many of the skills I use every day in communications were developed long before I sat behind a desk. They were learned in dance studios, backstage at competitions, and while teaching students of all ages.

One of the biggest lessons dance teaches is adaptability. No performance ever goes exactly as planned. Music skips, costumes malfunction, and dancers forget choreography. The show still has to go on. Communications professionals face similar challenges every day. Plans change, priorities shift, and unexpected issues arise. Success often comes from staying calm and finding solutions quickly.

Dance also develops strong storytelling skills. Every routine tells a story, whether through movement, music, or emotion. In communications, storytelling is equally important. The best campaigns, social media posts, and community engagement initiatives connect with people because they make them feel something.

Perhaps most importantly, dance teaches collaboration. A performance relies on dancers, teachers, choreographers, parents, volunteers, and technical crews working together toward a common goal. Communications projects require the same teamwork. Great results happen when people bring their different perspectives and strengths together.

Looking back, I realize that dance didn’t just prepare me to teach classes or choreograph routines. It helped develop the confidence, creativity, and communication skills that I use every day in my professional career. The stage and the office may seem worlds apart, but they have more in common than people think.
