When people think about communication, they usually think about words.

Presentations. Emails. Social media captions. Campaigns.

But for me, some of the most important lessons I’ve learned about communication didn’t come from a classroom or a workplace—they came from a dance studio.

Communication Isn’t Just What You Say

As a dance teacher, I’ve learned quickly that not everyone understands things the same way.

You can explain something perfectly, but if it doesn’t land with your dancers, it doesn’t matter how “clear” you think you were.

Sometimes it’s the way you say it.
Sometimes it’s the timing.
And sometimes, it’s realizing you need to say it differently.

That lesson translates directly into communications work.

It’s not about delivering a message—it’s about making sure it’s actually understood.

You Learn to Read the Room

In a studio, you’re constantly adjusting.

You can feel when a group is confident, overwhelmed, distracted, or disengaged—and you adapt in real time.

That same awareness shows up in communications.

Whether it’s an audience, a client, or a team, understanding how people are responding is just as important as what you’re saying.

Simplicity Matters

In dance, overcomplicating something rarely helps.

The more clear and intentional you are, the better the outcome.

It’s the same with messaging.

Clear, simple communication will always be more effective than something overly complex or trying too hard.

Connection Is Everything

At the end of the day, both dance and communications come down to connection.

You’re trying to make people feel something.
Understand something.
Remember something.

And the best way to do that is by being genuine.

Dance has shaped so much of how I approach my work, even in ways I didn’t fully realize at first.

It’s taught me to listen more closely, adapt more quickly, and communicate more intentionally.

And honestly, I think that’s something I’ll carry with me in everything I do.
